Description

This is an Invite-only class for homeschoolers. The recommended age range is 5 to 12. The class will be on September 24th at 12:00pm and will be a little over an hour long.

This class will be held on private property. It will be lead by Joe Ross( a.k.a ‘Joe Forager’) the owner of eattheplanet.org. We will walk the grounds as a group identifying and collecting plants that have traditional and potential uses. One plant we will not be collecting but will spend some time learning to identify is poison ivy, one of the most dangerous plants in the area. We will also look at a poison ivy remedy, jewelweed. We will discuss the existence of very toxic plants as well as edible plants and look at examples of these. We will also identify fragrant plants and wild versions of common vegetables, such as the wild carrot and a wild pecan relative. Other plants and their uses will be identified and touched on such as a cotton substitute, and natural dyes. Please wear closed-toed shoes. Bring enough water for a very short hike around the area, although we will be within a few hundred feet of the parking area at all times. Also bring bug spray if you are concerned about ticks, we may be walking through tall grass and wildflowers.
